About Me

👋🏽 I’m an author based in Bournemouth. I write fiction and non-fiction for 8-14 year olds (sometimes called MG, middle-grade). I also write many other things, including (in the past) two episodes of the UK soap opera, EastEnders.

I balance writing, visiting schools, editing, mentoring and delivering creative writing workshops (for adults and children) alongside working part-time, 3 days a week, as a Wellbeing Coach and Safeguarding Officer at an FE college.

As a child, I grew up in the care system. I was born in Cardiff, Wales but moved around a lot. I’ve lived in Barry, Suffolk, Lyme Regis, Exeter and London.

I’m passionate about diversity and inclusion and showing children that authors can come from different backgrounds. I’ve worked with Virtual Schools, as well as being a judge for the Coram Voices Creative Writing competition.

https://coramvoice.org.uk/get-involved/voices-writing-competition/ for three years now.

I have also worked with Anne Frank Trust UK and Creative Writing Courses & Writing Retreats and London Library and London Festival of Writing – Jericho Writers

If you’d like me to mentor you, edit, sensitivity read for you, run workshops or visit your school — please get in touch!

The wonderful Louie Stowell said recently: “Working with Em was such a joy – she gave my book careful and detailed consideration, really thinking from the young reader’s point of view rather than that of an adult with adult concerns. What would upset or undermine a child who’d experienced fostering or adoption vs what would make them feel more powerful or validated? She not only pointed out language or concepts that might be hurtful or harmful but also helped me come up with alternatives, which was immensely helpful. I’d work with her again in a second.”
