Like many writers and curious people, I’m interested in many different forms of creativity. Alas, I cannot make anything — I can’t draw, or paint, or sculpt. I wish I was better with my hands, but I’m not. But I am interested in all forms of expression, with words, on the page and hope to always experiment with different methods.
Before I got an agent and started publishing work for young people in 2019, I wrote short stories and flash fiction for many years. I did a Film degree, and then, much later, a Screenwriting MA.
During Covid, in May 2020, Coronavirus Theatre Club did a ‘shout out’ on Twitter (back in the days when it was a fun platform). My effort is below. It was thrilling seeing an actor breath life into something I’d written. This was originally a short story — and it’s flawed as a monologue for an actor, I can see that, but still, in future, I know I want to explore theatre making and/or playwriting. I’m becoming more interested in blending forms and experimentation.

And now for something completely different! 😊 I spend a lot of my time putting myself in the shoes of others, wondering how and why they feel as they do, think what they think etc… and I have a love of history. Often, real life historical figures inspire me. This monologue was the easiest and fastest piece I’ve ever written and was the first time I’d ever attempted a monologue. I had no idea what I was doing! But I imagined Rosa Parks being interviewed by a crowd of journalists or fans… all the information is based on facts.
The quality is dreadful I’m afraid, so please excuse it. At the time I worked at BU and they recorded a performance during BHM in 2015.
